Alopecia Aerata

Alopecia areata is a type of hair fall wherein hair loss occurs in small patches. These patches may not be visible initially, but subsequent patches created due to hair loss join and become visible. This condition can progress into alopecia universalis, i.e., complete and permanent hair loss. Alopecia areata mainly occurs on the scalp; however, eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hairs may also be affected. 

The cause for alopecia areata is not exactly known, however, it is understood to be an autoimmune disorder. Our immune system mistakenly thinks of hair as a foreign and unwanted substance (like bacteria), and attacks the hair follicles. This causes inflammation and permanent hair loss. You might have alopecia areata if you notice clumps of hair on your pillow or while bathing.
